Goalkeeper save zone tracking — the 3x3 goal grid

Every save your goalkeeper makes is placed on a 3x3 zone grid. Over time this builds a genuine heat map of their positioning and reach — the kind of analysis professional goalkeeping coaches use, accessible to any grassroots parent or coach.

Example: season-long save distribution heat map. Darker zones = more saves made.

  • 1 Tap a zone on the grid when recording each save — takes under two seconds on the sideline.
  • 2 Zones are colour-coded by frequency so patterns stand out at a glance — strong zones in dark green, rarely-reached zones in light grey.
  • 3 The same visualisation appears in match summaries and on the player's season overview — building a picture that improves with every game.
  • 4 Spots patterns a parent or coach simply cannot see from the sideline — which zones your keeper covers confidently and which are their weak side.
  • 5 Works just as well for outfield players tracking shot placement — the same grid is used in both Goalkeeper and Outfield mode.

Complete goalkeeper performance analysis in one app

The four goalkeeper actions in Skill Track Pro are designed to capture exactly what matters for youth goalkeeper development at grassroots level.

Saves

Record each save with its zone placement on the 3x3 grid. Toggle whether it was on-target or off-target. Build a season-long save distribution heat map showing where your keeper is strongest.

Claims

Record each claim with its type (Cross or Through Ball) and location (In Box or Out of Box). Track success rates for each combination to understand where your keeper commands confidently.

Cross / Through Ball In Box / Out of Box

Long Distribution

Track success and fail for goal kicks and long passes played out of hand. Build a success rate over the season to see improvement in kicking accuracy and playing the ball long under pressure.

Goal kicks Long passes

Short Distribution

Track success and fail for short passes played out from the back. Essential for modern keeper development — see whether your goalkeeper is growing in confidence playing under pressure.

Understanding the claims breakdown

The claims breakdown is one of the most revealing reports in goalkeeper analysis. It shows not just how many claims were made, but under which conditions the goalkeeper is most and least confident.

Example claims breakdown — end of season
Claim Type Location Claimed Missed Success
Cross In Box 12 4 75%
Cross Out of Box 8 1 89%
Through Ball In Box 3 4 43%
Through Ball Out of Box 7 2 78%

The example above reveals that the goalkeeper is commanding from crosses but hesitant on through balls played into the box — exactly the kind of specific, actionable insight that makes training conversations more productive.

At the end of your season, here's what you'll have

Every match you record builds towards a complete goalkeeper season report inside the app — saves mapped across the goal, claims broken down by type and location, distribution success rates. Here's a preview of what it looks like.

GPS vs Skill Track Pro

Goalkeeper tracking — frequently asked questions

Yes. Skill Track Pro has a dedicated Goalkeeper mode that tracks Saves (with 3x3 save zone placement), Claims (by type and location), Long Distribution, and Short Distribution. You can switch between Outfield and Goalkeeper mode mid-match with a single tap.
The 3x3 save zone grid divides the goal into nine zones — top left, top centre, top right, middle left, middle centre, middle right, bottom left, bottom centre, bottom right. When you record a save, you tap the zone where the shot was placed. Over the season, this builds a heat map showing where your goalkeeper is strongest and where they are being beaten.
Each claim is recorded with two pieces of context: the type (Cross or Through Ball) and the location (In Box or Out of Box). The app shows a claims breakdown by type and location — including success count, fail count, and success rate — so you can identify which situations your goalkeeper commands confidently and where they need development.
Yes. You can toggle between Outfield and Goalkeeper mode during any match. Each match records which actions were taken in which mode, so the player's stats page correctly separates outfield data from goalkeeper data. Many young players rotate positions — Skill Track Pro handles this naturally.
Yes, Skill Track Pro works 100% offline. All data is stored locally on your device using SQLite. You do not need WiFi, mobile data, or any connection at the pitch — essential for grassroots football grounds where signal is unreliable.
